Out on the Swedish Island of Gotland, in the middle of the Baltic Sea, a local farmer has uncovered a hoard of silver buried sometime in the 12th century. Back then, when vikings or other pirates were raiding, or the Danes were lurking around, the only safe thing to do with your coin was to bury it and hope you lived to dig it up again sometime. The owner of this hoard might not have made it.
The treasure was discovered when the landowner was moving some dirt, and so far 650 coins, some jewelry and what might be a piece of a silver ceremonial axe have been found.
I wonder how many pieces the farmer stashed away before calling the authorities? Finders keepers.
Anyway, what a story the coins could tell if they could talk.
