Non veni pacem mittere, sed gladium.
In landscape architecture, we call those "goat paths." The maintenance people at my old college campus would occasionally try to shoo students back onto the concrete sidewalks to preserve the lawn. I once asked why the sidewalks didn't go the way people obviously wanted to go and was told "so it would look symetrical from the air." That there is another example of voting with your feet.
Pavement is for sheep, shortcuts are for goats.
