  1. When I was in 4th grade, my father, a career Air Force officer, was assigned to the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA. During our time there, the held an International Naval Review. Navy ships from all over the world were there. One ship that my dad took us on for a VIP tour, was the USS Wisconsin. When we got to the ship's captain's chair, I grabbed the microphone and pushed the talk button and said, "Now heart this! Now hear this!" Everyone gasped and looked my way. I just smiled and handed the mic to a sailor standing there.

  2. I used to deliver to NS Earle. It's on Rt 34. No where near any body of water.

    1. “INFORMATION
The station’s Mainside is located in Colts Neck and the Waterfront is in the Leonardo section of Middletown. The two areas are connected by a private, federally-owned roadway. Colts Neck sits in the heart of New Jersey’s horse farming region and is only 20 minutes away from the famed Jersey Shore. Leonardo is located on Sandy Hook Bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the New York skyline“

    2. I pass it all the time going to sister in law's place. 20 - 30 minutes away. A lot of ammo has passed through there over the years.

  3. It's amazing how much diplomacy can be accomplished by being able to heave a 2000 lb shell 25 miles inland. Kind of makes you sit up and take notice. It's one of the reasons that the US was so paranoid on the west coast in the early days of WWII as a fair bunch of the population lived within 10 miles of the coast. The Yamamoto would have had a field day. And the next day would have been a smoking hulk. Would have made a nice artificial reef.

  4. Could be captioned "This is a stickup! Keep bringing money aboard until we get tired of watching."

  5. The Navy commissioned the fast-attack Virginia-class submarine USS New Jersey (SSN 796) in a ceremony held September 14, 2024 at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Middletown, New Jersey.

Further down route 36 on a hilltop at Hartshorne Woods is Battery Lewis. Battery Lewis is the only 16 inch gun battery in the State of New Jersey. A 16-inch gun barrel, now on display in the battery’s south casemate, was originally mounted on the USS New Jersey during WWII.

  6. I spent a couple of years on the Ammunition ship USS Great Sitkin AE-17. We were homeported in Bayonne at what is now Port Liberty.

We would go to Earle from time to time to load and unload. Very, very long pier.
