Mutant, blue eyed coyotes photographed in Marin County
Because the trait appears to be localized to a 100-mile radius of the seashore, and has yet to be recorded elsewhere in the United States, scientists believe the blue eyes are the result of a gene mutation. National Geographic says the mutation likely appeared several generations ago. The magazine called Dietrich's discovery quite possibly "one in a million."
"How pervasive is the mutation? We don't know. It's not something we were aware of beforehand," said Camilla Fox, the founder and executive director of Project Coyote, a national nonprofit based in Marin County that promotes conservation and coexistence between coyotes and humans. Until the coyotes are tracked and studied, Fox said, it's impossible to say with certainty the cause of the coloration and where it started.

President Trump intends to nominate Daniel Bress, Daniel Collins, and Kenneth Lee to the San Francisco-based appeals court, considered to be the country’s most liberal, the White House announced.
Good. There's no way either Feinstein or Pelosi should be given the time of day by Trump, let alone allowed to negotiate something so important. The 9th Circuit is a clown show of regressive liberals and kooks, and an injection of adult supervision is long overdue.

As polar vortex tightens its grip on midwestern US, AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures plummet to -75 F
The coldest weather in years will put millions of people and animals throughout the midwestern United States at risk for hypothermia and frostbite to occur in minutes during the final days of January.
The deep freeze has commenced across the Upper Midwest with an AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperature of 75 degrees below zero Fahrenheit reported at Grand Forks, North Dakota, on Tuesday morning.
The worst is yet to come for other parts of the Midwest as the polar vortex gets displaced from the Arctic Circle and dives into the region.
"Some locations in the Midwest will be below zero continuously for 48-72 hours," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll.
The harshest conditions are anticipated from North Dakota to northern Illinois, where there can be a prolonged stretch of dangerously low AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures that can cause frostbite in mere minutes.
On Wednesday, highs will stop well short of rising above 10 below zero from Fargo, North Dakota, to Minneapolis and Chicago. Highs in the single digits will have those from Kansas City, Missouri, to St. Louis to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Pittsburgh shivering.
Wednesday night can be just as cold, if not colder, than Tuesday night in many areas.
Temperatures in Chicago can drop to 22 below zero for the first time since the mid-1980s.
Sheriffs in Rural Washington Refuse to Enforce Latest Gun Controls
No government employee or agent has any duty to enforce an unconstitutional order or law.

Klickitat County Sheriff Bob Songer is one of those allegedly refusing to enforce the controls. He said the controls are “unconstitutional on several grounds. I’ve taken the position that as an elected official, I am not going to enforce that law.”
The controls include a nine-day waiting period for semiautomatic rifle purchases, a minimum semiautomatic rifle purchase age of 21, a required gun safety course for purchasers, and an “enhanced background check” for semiautomatic rifle purchasers.
Democrat lawmakers in Washington are already trying to build onInitiative I-1639 by pushing bans on “high-capacity” magazines and securing a red flag law to allow gun confiscation.
Next, they'll try to take control of your very right to life. Look at what the Regressives just did in New York, with their abortion until birth law! Downright murder. Next, they'll be trying to knock off the old, because they'll be too expensive to the state.
The national party just now eliminated "So Help Me God" from the oath. Can't have a competing authority when you aspire to be the ultimate authority, can you?
I've never seen a quicker change towards Communism/Socialism/Evil in any party in my life than I'm seeing now in the former Democratic Party.

Elephant seals take over Drake's Beach at Point Reyes
The seals took over at Drakes Beach, knocking down a fence and moving into the parking lot, and they remained lounging in the sand after the park reopened Sunday, leading staff to close the road from Sir Francis Drake Boulevard to the beach.
The park is home to a colony of about 1,500 elephant seals.
In the past, a seal or two has popped up on the wide Drakes Beach that's popular with visitors, and now 50 to 60 adults who've birthed 35 pups have hunkered down.

Can't have too many rocket engine factories
Blue Origin held a groundbreaking ceremony in Huntsville, Alabama, Jan. 25 to formally mark the start of construction of a factory that will be used for building BE-4 engines. The company announced plans to build the factory there in June 2017, contingent on the selection of the engine by United Launch Alliance for its Vulcan rocket. ULA picked the BE-4 in September 2018.
The factory, scheduled for completion in March 2020, will build dozens of BE-4 engines a year for both Vulcan as well as Blue Origin's own New Glenn vehicle. Both rockets are scheduled to make first launches in 2021. Vulcan will use two BE-4 engines in its first stage while New Glenn's reusable first stage will be powered by seven BE-4 engines.

The Hard Luck Castle was constructed between 2000 and 2012 with engineering that is designed to last 400 to 500 years, according to the property listing. It's made of steel, concrete, cinder block and glass. More than seven tons of rebar and 24,000 bricks were used to build the castle, according a website about the structure.

I'm going to miss these. The Redding place just has a gas fireplace, which I guarantee you I'll never turn on. No crack or pop, no need to tend and poke.
Like I told the LT, next I'll need to see if I can find a cabin within reasonable driving distance with a real wood burner, so at least intermittently I can get my fix.

Straight Razor
Ebay produced this Erik Anton Berg straight, with a really nice "Swedish Mackerel" etch on the blade (it's Eriks trademark, and it's supposed to be a shark).
I got out my Arkansas stones and strop this afternoon, and in a surprisingly short time got it
so sharp is would effortlessly plow up a wave of hair off my arm, leaving a smooth path behind. Now my arm looks a little weird.
