The beauty of the scraper is it propels the sparks into whatever you're using to start the fire.

  1. When you NEED a fire you can play silly games, or you can keep 4 real full size Bics on you and have fire for the next 4 years or more. Yes, in all weather and in all conditions. Anyone says differently is a novice and should be shunned.

    1. True, but it's the challenge, and the lessons learned that the fire stick offers. Not silly really. You'll come away from the exercise with a better understanding, then you can use the bic.

Lighters are always choice number one but not having a back up plan?? Your novice is showing…

    3. The backup plan is 3 other Bics, nitwit.

    5. Yeah, almost as good as that firestick.

  2. A “Bic” is fine most of the time, but I found they didn’t work so well in the cold, at higher altitudes. (Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center)

  3. Had Lighters of all types fail at -50f on a regular basis. Always have a back up. I've used both the ferro rod and flint and steel at those temps with success. Prepping for the fire is the most important thing.

    1. How in the world does your first layer become -50 degrees? My experience is in northern Germany and Alaska.

    2. Ferro rod is the best option. The ferro rod will light almost anything that has been finely shredded, while flint and steel requires something like charred muslin.

You can buy 5 ferro rods and they will outlast 5 Bics by a lot.

  4. The thong on the scrapper needs to be lengthened so it can reach the end of the rod. To properly use it, place the end of the rod very close to what you are trying to light, with the scrapper at the upper end, then pull the rod away from what you are aiming at. The sparks will go to the point the end of the rod is at. If the thong is not long enough, you will not be able to use the entire length of the rod.

  5. Why can't Indians spell "scraper?" I've seen this term inappropriately used in computer science when they talk about scraping a web page. Of course then it's "scrapping."

  6. Learn to use your knife. Scrapers will get lost when you need them most.
