Cold and Rocky. What does someone do for a living in such a place, I wonder?

  1. Excellent question. The 'support' layer (grocer, hardware, medical if any, etc) is pretty obvious, but what is the community's PRIMARY - that is, external to the community, not just trading poker chips - source of income? Hunting, fishing, mining, general resource extraction, sure. Tourism (a la Mackinac Island et al). But otherwise?

  4. This image captures a scenic view of the town of Uummannaq in Greenland, nestled at the base of its iconic heart-shaped mountain.

Location: Uummannaq is one of the northernmost towns in Greenland, located on an island of the same name north of the Arctic Circle.

The Mountain: The landscape is dominated by the twin peaks of a 1,170-meter high granite mountain, which gives the town its name (Uummannaq means "heart-shaped").

Atmosphere: The photo shows the town during a period of twilight, with the distinctively colorful houses nestled in the snow.

Tourism: It is a popular destination known for its dramatic scenery, icebergs, and as a starting point for dog sledding expeditions.
