And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I have cut gem stones from old pieces obtained in the 60's, excellent earthy tones from orange to purple, but lord above that materiel has got to be the hardest agate there is, hard on saw blades and grinding wheels, on the other hand, thru intensive sanding, a polish if the highest grade can be obtained. Very pretty, its a favorite agate with woman, not sure why.
Always hoped to go. Friends went, back then anyone could pick up pieces take them home, how I ended up with some, they had good photos too, I could see the ground was polluted with all sorts of pieces of ancient trees. Traded cutting stones for some pieces, still have a few lbs, its truly rugged stuff. Any time I need to wear out a good diamond blade, I start slicing off slabs.
We live about a half-hour south of the park. It's a lovely place, but almost never very crowded. You can find all kinds of petrified wood all over the area between our place and Holbrook.

ReplyDeleteHa! So true.
DeleteHomeland - my parents met while working there.
ReplyDeleteWent there about ten years ago. It was empty.
ReplyDeleteThere was more petrified wood in the town of Holbrook.
People used it for curb stops.
