And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I remember well as a child hiking through the woods with friends and even if we'd seen it a thousand times, how magical it was "stumbling" upon a stream. Making dams, hunting for crayfish and other "creepy-crawlies" and simply exploring. Growing up in the country and left to our own devices for most of a day was just what we did and it was a great way to grow up. How I hated the sun going down and how it ended our day of wandering, but how I loved the anticipation of being able to do it all over again the next day.....as long as our chores were done, that is!
Talk of building dama reminds me. Me and two others stacked rocks across a stream. When finished the dam was about four feet tall. One of us climbed a tree hanging over the creek to make a rope swing. It made a perfect swimming hole. Of course, there were trout and sun fish so of course we fished for dinner. Like you say, living in the country was glorious.
Catch yourself a brace of brookies along that creek.

DeleteSeems like there was always a magical place like that for a kid to find in SoCal in the 50's and 60s.
