Say what you want, but Russian icebreakers are cool.

  1. Russian engineering follows an entirely different set of design principles, but frequently works well. It's tough to get your mind around it though.

    1. If you mean strength of material, mechanics, structural design, hydrodynamics, electromagnetism..., everyone follows the exact same principles. But if you mean design for function and economy, then, yes the Russians are different. Their stuff works.

The USCG has two icebreakers of about 14,000 t. One is active, the other is mothballed.

Russia has four large nuclear powered icebreakers, each about 33,000 t, plus 37 smaller icebreakers designed to clear harbor ice. The large icebreakers are designed to keep open the Northern Route across Siberia. This route is 40% shorter than the Suez route for ships sailing from China to Europe.

  2. Pretty big superstructure, with a lot of windows. Wonder what goes on in there.

    1. Supercargo
One can buy passage. Free passage over much of the ship, play on the ice, visit defunct Soviet mining towns, eat very well.
