And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. Harry Hudson Rodmell (1896–1984, England)- “The Tramp Steamer”
Mr. Rodmell had an uncanny ability to capture all the details that are important in a painting like this. Always exciting to "discover" a new favorite artist! Nice choice, CW!
This picture depicts the ship of John Masefield's poem Cargoes Dirty British coaster with salt-caked smoke stack, Butting through the channel in the mad March days, With a cargo of Tyne coal, Road rails, pig lead, Firewood, iron-ware, and cheap tin trays.
My grand-uncle wrote this book about his experiences - Ida was a Tramp by E.J. A thrilling and powerful painting. To be passenger on such a ride I'd be puking my guts up.
ReplyDeleteShades of Joseph Conrad. I've been in seas like this. No damned fun boys, no damned fun at all.
