During a first ascent of Mount Everest, Irvine and his climbing partner George Mallory disappeared on the mountain's northeast ridge. The pair were last seen a few hundred metres from the summit. In May 1999, Mallory's body was found at 8,155 m (26,760 ft) by the Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition, in a funnel-shaped basin on the "8,200 m Snow Terrace.” Irvine’s body has never been found. Although rumors have circulated suggesting a Chinese team found Irvine, removed the body, and are guarding it, as well as a camera containing evidence that the pair reached the summit of Everest – in order to protect the claim that the 1960 Chinese team was the first to reach the top.
Considering Hillary and Norgay actually reached the summit first in 1953, seven years before the Chinese claim, what would be the point of hiding the body?
