And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Vickers played Carmen Sternwood in the 1948 Bogie original In the 1974 Mitchum remake the part of Carmen Sternwood was played by Candy Clark. (Candy is best known for her role as Debbie Dunham in 1973's American Graffiti)
Bacall and Vickers were great sirens in that film, but Dorothy Malone as the bookshop clerk just stole the movie. Breathtaking beauty and shocking scene.
Carmen meets Doghouse Reilly
ReplyDeleteBabe
ReplyDeleteMartha Vickers...very cute.
ReplyDeleteShe carries that hair style every bit as well as Veronica Lake did.
DeleteThe best movie version. Robert Mitchum’s version falls flat. And it does have Vickers or a reasonable substitute.
ReplyDeleteOf course, Vickers is crazy, and she did kill Riley (?).
Well, Sean Regan was the dead McGuffin. William Faulkner co-wrote the screenplay. A lot of Chandler's dialog was preserved in the film.

ReplyDeleteThe bookshop scene is second only to "you know how to whistle" scene in hotness. At least in Bogie movies.
