And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Boeing’s 314 was before my time but it’s indelibly bookmarked as THE Pan Am Clipper. Stratocruiser 377 was the Clipper of my youth. Alternately, heartstrings were twanged by the 377 and Lockheed’s Constellation. Connie ultimately wins out. Always had time to stop and watch KC-97 make their way into MacDill AFB.
I forgetted! Interesting story about Boeing 314's. After Pearl Harbor a Clipper was stranded in the Pacific region. Crew decided to get home anyway or how. Saddled up and set off on a successful marathon reverse course flight to San Francisco. A significant example of navigation not to mention airmanship. A simple search may still provide access to the story.
When my father was transferred from Hawaii to Japan, we rode in a similar four prop airliner. It took over 24 hours to get there. UGH!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. We stopped several times to refuel.
