Now rendered nearly irrelevant by drones

  1. Our US Marine M-48A3 and M-67A2 tanks in Vietnam had Continental power trains in them.

  2. I think that may be a R 975 radial engine. I may be wrong, and you can call
bullshit as you did on my last post.

    2. You are correct, Continental built R975 Wright Whirlwinds under licence in WWII for use in tanks. Shermans also were powered by the Dodge "multibank" engine which is FIVE straight six car engines joined together or the massive Ford GAA V8.

  3. I think everyone was shocked at how useful drones have suddenly become in battle.
weve seen the Strikers etc with the "birdcage" bars around them to stop the RPGs, but seeing main battle tanks like the M1 Abrams with chickenwire strung over pvc pipe hoops to stop the drones was really unexpected.

watching the drons fly right into the windshield of a fuel tanker truck, or fly into the top or bottom of the tanker truck and blow it up is wild.

and watching them fly under slightly open hanger doors and destroy the aircraft inside is bizarre.

tanks changed WW-1, airplanes changed WW-2 and drones have changed war in a significant way for everyone involved , both offense and defense.

  4. I wouldn't count tanks out just yet. When they become capable of being operated remotely, it will be easier to protect them from topside attacks. With time we will see more effective countermeasures for drones, but for now, tanking is a more dangerous business than it was just three years ago.

    1. Tanks need lots of soft trucks behind them, with fuel and ammo, that are very vulnerable to drives and IEDs.

The proliferation of precision guided munitions is changing everything. No more large Iraq-style forward operating bases. Even our ships are more vulnerable.

Hmmm…perhaps we should mind our own business?

    2. …drones…not drives. Sorry.

  5. The main reason that tanks on the battlefield in the Ukraine are having problems is that the Russian tank crews are (a) very poorly trained (b) the tank officers are clueless and (c) Russians (in general) are drunks. During the last two years of battles, at 7 PM the war stops, and the Russians drink all night.

  6. Yeah, ok John Zelenskyy. Why is Russia kicking Ukie ass? Why the hate for Russians, because they are Christians?

    1. There seems to be a seething hatred for the Russians that started back in the early 1950's and has persisted up until today. And most of the problems were brought on by themselves. Case in point: During my 12 months and 29 days as a US Marine in Vietnam, the Russians provided arms and ammunition for the NVA. Those arms killed and wounded 58,000+ Americans up to and including some dear friends of mine. And today, one of the most "powerful" nations in the world does seem able to prevail over a minor nation like Ukraine. Why? One major reason is that the Russians are either drunk or hungover always and forever.

    2. So much wrong with your comment that it is not even funny!

Russia is not kicking Ukie ass. The wass was supposed to last 3 days and has been going for years. At the current territory gain rate it will take Russia 328 years to fully conquer Ukraine.
The post is about tanks and their utility in today's battlefield. No one said anything about Russia or Ukraine until you brought it up.
Ukrainians are majority Christian. Furthermore 70% of Ukrainians are christian versus 60% of Russians. If anything Ukrainians are more christian than Russians!
