    1. Not quite. Its older cousin the F102 was after the prototype's top speed was disappointing. They tacked a couple of bulges to its arse end to see if that new fangled area rule theory worked, and it did.

    2. That was such a great leap of engineering when it was put to use, so many aircraft have used it, always makes me think of the great Russian designs MIG 25 and 30.

  7. I remember their single-stage afterburner kicking in on takeoff. Used to scare the crap out of me as a perimeter guard.

  8. Met a fellow in Tucson, stayed at his home and he regaled me with stories of piloting the F106. Said it was just a fantastic jet, loved it best, how one day he decided to fly right down main street of the small town he was raised in, low as possible, just above the telephone poles, gave the town a acrobatic show doing every sort of flying technique till he was out of fuel range, how later when visiting home on leave everyone of course knew it was him right off, and had become a highly celebrated event by most of the town, a definite note of honor which turned into officially a yearly street celebration and holiday. I could see in his eyes telling stories about the jet how excellent a fighter jet it must have been.
