And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Pearl inlaid English or American bowie knife, mid 19th century.
I'm not any kind of knife expert, but I do love history. With that in mind, the backstrap scrollwork suggests east coast colonial America to me. Also the dark wood with delicate inlay mirrors a lot of Boston wood work of that era.
Also, and please forgive my ignorance, but I was not aware of the Brits adopting the bowie knife pattern. Am I wrong?
And when I said it suggests colonial America, I mean the scrollwork looks like a lot a colonial buildings on the east coast, I am not saying it was made in colonial times.
Looks like abalone shell inlay. Beautiful piece.
ReplyDeleteIt’s pretty, but I like my 1970s Harvey Draper Bowie knife.
