1931 Macchi-Castoldi MC-72 at the Italian Air Force Museum Rome. 440 MPH on floats, a world record never bettered.

  1. Two V12s will do that. The copper on the struts and floats are the surface cooling system, so no radiator to create drag.

  2. Like to know how/why they came up with that prop design.

    1. Contra-rotating props recover a lot of the energy otherwise wasted in the swirling flow aft of the props. At the cost of some mechanical efficiency and complexity, you can regain more in aerodynamic efficiency. The fastest prop plane in the world is the Soviet/Russian Tu-95 Bear with 4 montrously powerful turboprop engines driving a pair of 4-bladed props each.

  3. That's two props look and you see the leading edge are opposite counter rotating

    1. Porco's airplane was based on the Macchi M33. One of my favorite. Get the model hobby kit, it is fun.

  5. There were also radiators on the top of the wings. What is not to like with a red airplane?

  6. 440 MPH on the floats.
Wonder what it'd do in the air.
