And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I think that fighter is what the Navy's best single combat pilot was flying. Guy had all his flight's pilots bail on him due to mechanical issues. They all ran for the carrier, and left him to tangle with 7 RUSSIAN flown MiGs. The Russians credited him with 6 MiGs, as only one made it back to base. His bosses didn't credit him with any, IIRC. There was an attempt to get him a medal of some sort for that engagement recently.
Grumman Cougar, I think.

ReplyDeleteMy uncle took a photograph in Korea of one of these in flight from a following aircraft.
ReplyDeleteIt was F9F-5 Panthers fighter bomber (straight wing) in the movie Bridges …. F9F-6 Cougar swept wing is what’s pictured here… more pure fighter…
