And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The Flatiron Building is currently vacant. There was an auction for the building and some unknown person submitted the winning bid (I think $190 million) but never put up a bond and suddenly disappeared. The former owner Jeff Gural was blocked from regaining possession of the building. His father used to own the building with the Helmsleys.
I read the Flatiron was going to be converted to apartments/condos and its office history is at an end. The phrase "23 skidoo" was inspired by the wind vortex when the building sat alone without other buildings to buffer the gusts... that would blow women's dresses up above the waist line. The cops took note of the lecherous men loitering on 23rd Street awaiting the magic moment and thus they got the "23 skidoo." You're welcome.
My Mom went to art school there in the 30’s. She was from LA and said she was walking down the street one day, saw a sign that said ‘pizza’ and wondered what that was.
I am not so sure that this is the Flatirons building in Times Square. There is not electronic billboard or other Times Square "paraphernalia" in sight.

ReplyDeleteThe Flatiron isn't at Times Square which is 42nd to 43rd Streets. The Flatiron is at 23rd Street.
