Fast Pass

  1. A story from the rich lore of the SR-71. The aircraft was on a cross country mission and wanted to change altitude, so he called center. "Request flight level one two zero zero"
The center controller was confused. Couldn't have meant 1200. Did he say 120? Flight level 120 is 12,000 feet, but that's below the lower limit of Class A airspace (FL180) so it's not even a flight level. "Say again your requested flight level"
"Requesting flight level one two zero zero"
OK now the controller is annoyed. 120,000 feet MSL? Yeah, right. This guy is jerking me around. Whatever. "Cleared one two zero zero. It;'s all yours, buddy"
    "Roger. Descending."

  2. BS it didn’t fly that high and it would have been ABOVE controlled airspace (60,000 ft) and not handled by ATC
