Rusty old oil rig in the North Sea.

  1. And? is it still working or am I to be concerned about it because of the green assholes?

  2. For the interested: This is Brage platform, northern North Sea, Norwegian sector. Statoil is the operator. The platform has been there since the early 90's, so it's approaching end of life; field production is a fraction of what it was at its peak. The sturdy-looking derrick is over the well area; this platform, like many in the North Sea, has its own permanent drilling rig that scoots back and forth to position over the various wells. You can see the well conductor pipes going down into the water, underneath. The accommodations (hotel) is the white block on the opposite end. The rest is production process area, the gear that handles the produced petroleum fluids, gas and oil and prepares it for export via pipelines on the seabed. Looks like an 8-leg stretch jacket design (the truss work going into the water that supports the top sides). Water depth is about 500 ft there. The big boom angling upward on the left corner is the vent - in case they need to blow-down and depressurize the topsides and pipeline, in the event of an emergency. Partly that's a lesson from Piper Alpha, another North Sea platform that burned up in the 80's, killing many.
