    Generally, only attacks at the surface. Sharks under the water seem to know the difference between people and seals. Not so on the surface.

    THe swimmer is probably safer than you think.

    1. The magnetic signature of a diver (particularly with scuba) is radically different than a splasher on the surface, as you suggest. However blood in the water cancels out everything.

    2. But hold on a sec. Isn't there some point where the swimmer is a surface target thrashing around on the surface? Boundary conditions are so complex...

As long as I was in the position shown I wouldn't be too worried, especially if the reef fish are still out and about (they seem to know when these creatures are hungry vs. when they are just passing by). But as soon as that baby disappears from view, I'm back on the boat post haste. Great Whites are awesome ambush predators...
