The nut of the argument:
And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Unfortunately, if Iran does develop some nuclear weapons, as it appears Obama is allowing them to do, it could mean the destruction of Israel. Most people don't have any appreciation of how _physically_ small Israel is, and how few weapons it would take to kill 90+% of her population. Yes, Iran would probably be destroyed in the exchange, but how much better if we didn't lose _either_ of them to WMD. I think there are actually a good number of Iranians who recall what it was like before the Ayatollahs took over, and would like to experience those (relative) freedoms again. I believe a substantial number would disavow islam just to gain that level of freedom once more, if they could do so safely. Even if they only comprise 25% of Iran's population, it would be nice if they survived.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. That is why it's so important to keep the mullah away from nukes for as long as possible.
DeleteArmageddon?
ReplyDeleteIt would have been nice if MAD had a reasonable option but it never did. I think more than 70% of our ICBMS would have worked where I don't think more than 20% of the USSR's would have lifted off successfully. Bombers were a non-starter for the Russians. With Israel, they're, comparatively lucky? that the Iranians will attack as soon as they can rather than wait until the can achieve total victory.
