Something to remember

  1. Didn't Lincoln over step the Constitution as well?

  2. Yep, not the least of which was suspending habeas corpus at will and muzzling the press (by shutting down newspapers who didn't agree with him and/or locking up publishers/editors).

  3. Anonymous, Lincoln operated on the concept of uniting a divided nation. Obama operates under the concept of dividing a generally unified nation. There is a different imperative at work. At least that's my perspective on it.

War of Northern Aggression: Lincoln also emancipated slaves in the Confederacy without emancipating slaves in areas that the Union had "pacified". It was a symbolic gesture at best. Constitutional? That's arguable. But since the Confederacy was ruled by a separate government, it's sort of like an executive order that is intended to force a policy on Russia. Only applies to the extent that the Russians would allow it to be applied.

  4. LL, I do agree, Lincoln's goal was different, he was trying to preserve the Union, Obama is purposely trying to divide us. While the south did secede and tried to form their own nation, the Union did not recognize it. Lincoln did have people in the press who were against him imprisoned. In the the North as well. While emancipation was a noble cause, does the end justify the means. That's what the left believes, that the end justifies the means. And the war wasn't really about that anyway, Lincoln just used it as a chip. Don't get me wrong, Lincoln was always a hero to me, but now we have Obama comparing himself to Lincoln, and while their motives are different, Obama is using Lincoln as a precedent to abuse his authority. Because Lincoln did set the precedent. It makes my head hurt. Interesting topic.
