And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Frank Perry at the Dugout, Lambshead Ranch, Albany, Texas, 1988
Dugouts made sense. They still do to some degree. Insulation, protection from attack (you can argue it, but from a small tactics perspective, it's like attacking a cave of sorts), and expense.
I live in a subdivision, not a dugout. It's more of a function of suburban sprawl and no dug-out space available. Then again, I wear a suit. My consolation to myself is that I drive a Raptor and also carry a handgun wherever I go...cold comfort.

ReplyDelete"get that damn horse off the roof..."
Love the B&W photo. Look like it was taken a hundred years ago.
ReplyDeleteSome places out west look like the 1890's. Finding them is the fun part.
DeleteI was thinking the caption of the photo would have been just as believable if it had read 1888 as it was for 1988, possibly more so.
