And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

XB-70 Valkyrie
ReplyDeleteTwo were built, one still exists. One was destroyed in a mid-air collision with a chase plane during a test flight. The other is in the Air Force Museum at Dayton, OH. It is a VERY large aircraft.
ReplyDeleteYep. What a tragedy.

XB-70 was supposed to be a strategic bomber with the speed, altitude, and range of the SR-71 or F-12.(Mach 3.5+) It was supposed to replace the B-52. Program got killed by Carter if I recall correctly. ---Ray
ReplyDeleteI have a photo of me standing next to the B-70 on the roll-out at North American Aviation (maybe North American Rockwell by then) in El Segundo, CA. My father worked for NAA, thus my brother and I were tagging along. I recall that each of the six engine nozzles were bigger around than I was tall at the time.
ReplyDeleteThe internet is amazing.
ReplyDeleteIt scared the bejeezus out of the Soviets; the MiG-25 was built to oppose it. It was Robert McNamara who was primarily responsible for cancelling it.
