Classic. Best of all, you can work on it and keep it running, and the NSA can't track you due to the lack of modern electronics. Plus, if you get in an accident, who do you think is better protected - the modern car made of plastic, or this metal behemoth?
Gas milage = probably 8 miles to the gallon, downhill.
And she still has the hubs!
ReplyDeleteOh that is a gorgeous Binder! I love coming to this blog....
ReplyDeleteAren't you in Germany? Are you commenting while on vacation?
DeleteBinder, really? wow, I thought that was a local term we came up with back in the early mid 70's. The one close to this we had for family business delivery with heavier suspension we also called "La Bomba" out of respect for Cheech and Chong. I remember me, GF and 4 other couples parked in a back field making out to April wine on an 8 track. No sex, a lot of heavy petting.....lol
DeleteMy first car was a 1957 International Travelall (The Green Monster). And yes, it got about 10 MPG being very low geared. However gasoline in 1957 was in the $.10/gallon range back in .57. My truck had a steel I-beam girder for a front bumper. Once in the snow/icy road surface, a car slid sideways into me as it was traveling and caught the corner of the I-beam. Damage to the Green Monster was a tiny paint transfer. Damage to the striking vehicle (I was stopped at the time) was a total as it opened up the (Buick sedan - as I recall it) like a can opener from front to back.
ReplyDeleteYes, they were heavy, there was no a/c, the gearing was low, and they were underpowered, but they were a thing of beauty all the same. My '57 had been a government vehicle owned by the FCC that had been surplus when my grandfather bought it and gave it to me at age 15. We worked on it together as a project and added a second gas tank (short legs, horrible mileage) and an Earl Scheib $19.95 paint job. (that was when Scheib painted any car for $19.95) I can't recall what my grandfather paid for it - I think that he bought it for $150.00.
Great story!
DeleteI'm back from Germany and now have a snooty taste in beers. The only thing I saw between Frankfurt and Munich that had an IH on it was a tractor. I missed seeing the occasional Binder or two but then I don't picture then at 120 mph on the autobahn.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, I LOVE old cars but they aren't as safe in high speed collisions. Newer cars use a lot of plastic for cosmetic reasons but are a lot safer. I would rather be in my 06 GMC p/u plowing into a telephone pole than my 69.
