And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
That's one of the models my FIL supported. Probably every part has been replaced / upgraded by now. He said in the few years @ Fairchild USAF base, it was one retrofit after another.
B-52H Stratofortress entered service in 1961. The U.S. Air Force is currently upgrading the remaining fleet of around 76 operational H models into the designated B-52J model, featuring modern Rolls-Royce F130 engines and new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar systems.
The B-52A first flew in 1954, and the B model entered service in 1955. A total of 744 B-52s were built, with the last, a B-52H, delivered in October 1962.
If you ever get the chance to witness a take off near the end of the runway, do partake. Hearing the roar of the engines as the bird comes up to speed from over a mile away, then watching the rotate and lift off, it's an awesome experience.
Is it just me or is that fuselage badly wrinkled? I've read that the A model had all the hydraulic pumps and electric generators in the fuselage driven by air turbines. Bleed air was piped from the engines to drive the air turbines. This arrangement allowed the flight engineer to repair the systems in flight and reduced the number of hydraulic lines and electrical cables. The GPU cart is providing high pressure air to the aircraft to run the bleed air system and possibly to start the engines via their air turbine starters. Al_in_Ottawa
52's used to come in over the desert, line up on Vale, Oregon, make a bomb run, then power up, climb like hell. Cool af. Used to know what it was in preparation for, but too long ago.

ReplyDeleteThe new Rolls-Royce engine upgrade will see '52s in service for nearly 100 years. Steve_in_Ottawa

That’s a childhood memory for me. Dad was a B52 EWO, retired in 69. JP4 is one of those comforting aromas.

Gravity makes the skin wrinkle while on the ground. In flight aerodynamics change the load, support the fuselage and the wrinkles disappear.
DeleteThe Boeing B-52 officially entered service with the U.S. Air Force in February 1955.
ReplyDelete(I looked it up)
Grew up south of a B-52 airbase and our town was used as a target/waypoint. Every weekday one would fly overhead around 2 pm.
