And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
A "pace" is roughly 30 inches. 30 paces would be roughly 900 inches. 900 inches is 75 feet. ...If shooters are each walking 30 paces in opposite directions...150 feet. Quite a distance for a duel!
Agreed. Those look like smooth-bore 10ga shotguns. Get hit with that and they'll be cleaning you off the wall with a mop! ...maybe that 150' wasn't such a bad idea!
In one of the Hornblower books, the Captain remarked that the best use of his boarding pistol was to place it against the ribs of his opponent before firing. That'll work!
Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is modern pistols that look like these, with exposed hammers, that can break open and fire a .50 cal bullet. .50AE or .500SW&W; I don't care (though my wrists will).
30x30=900= 75 feet
ReplyDeletewouldn't mind 1 or both in my stable
30 +30 =60

Doesn't hurt most dueling pistols then were smoothbores, and or weighted in ways to cause one or both participants to miss.
DeleteAt that range, with those devices, you'd be lucky to get a near miss...
ReplyDeleteThere is a reason why 10 paces in a duel was often - a hit at that range was pretty likely.
Those look more like 'boarding pistols' than dueling pistols.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.

Agree as well
DeleteMy first thought too.
DeleteI think those are howdah pistols. Handy for those moments when a tiger is climbing into your howdah.
ReplyDeleteI also think they are howdah pistols. Duellists didn't use double barrelled pistols.

ReplyDeleteTo me, whenever they outlawed duals was a sad day. I wish that they still have them for career politicians.
ReplyDeleteKnowing our politicians today you’d likely be facing off with their second.
DeleteThe second is your dual in the duel .
