Earning that privilege

  1. Yes, there's a lot of 'privilege' to be seen in that photo. Steve_in_Ottawa

  4. Physical labour level: Tough
    Opportunity Risk level: High
    Essential gear: Horse
    Benefits: No neighbors
Disadvantage: Exposure to elements, weather, little food, attacks from animals and native peoples, no medical/health help, total darkness at night, loneliness (going to church would be the only hope to some interaction and news).

    1. At the time that pik was taken none of that stuff meant a thing to them people. They were hardy folk.

Pussified people of today have been programmed to be terrified of all the stuff you listed.

A great culling awaits.....and the burn-off will be glorious.

    2. My grandfather, according to family history, got trapped in the Idaho mountains alone by early snows with the herd of sheep he was tending.
He spent the entire winter taking care of the herd and himself. He was
twelve years old at the time. He married my grandmother when he was
fourteen and they raised thirteen children in east Tennessee (my mother's
brothers and sisters). Amazingly, they all survived till their late 80's or early 90's. To say pioneer stock is tough would be an understatement!

  5. I'm hoping that their p!$$pour land still transferred with mineral rights and oil was found in abundance. And that little girl is now a very elderly, well off matriarch with a lot of offspring who appreciate the hardscrabble life of earlier generations. That's what I choose to think, YMMV.

  7. By the way, this picture looks more like the 30's depression.
