And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

16 year old Annette Funicello posing as a bicycle Queen of 1959 while sitting on a Schwinn bicycle at the Walt Disney studios in California.
Rode a 26" Schwinn American, age 11-15. I was 5'5" most of the time I rode it everywhere, on weekends 4 miles each way. Due to a 28" inseam in HS, could do a 600 lb. leg press easily on a Universal. Guys that got scholarships to State & Ole MIS*, could barely do 300.
At 72, still ride a bike 3-4 miles over sand roads 3X/week. Great way to stay in shape.
That’s a pleasant blast from the past.
ReplyDeleteBack before Disney started trafficking and abusing the kids.
ReplyDeleteHow do you know Annette was not abused by Disney back then?
Delete(I have no knowledge of abuse - just asking.)
Bar sinister???
ReplyDeleteShoulda had someone adjust that sash for readability.

She looks about...30.
ReplyDeleteTimes have changed and not always for the better.
Were there any bikes besides Schwinn in 1959?
ReplyDeleteYes, Columbia. I had one in the 40s. They may still be in production.
DeleteIn 1954, when I was in 3rd grade, the Mickey Mouse club was all the rage among my peers. Annette was the darling among the boys.
ReplyDeleteShe's even wearing Pedal Pushers.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the bumpers hadn't arrived yet.
