And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
That shaded area in the Northwest of the panhandle is the three million acre XIT Ranch, granted to a group in exchange for constructing the Texas state capitol building that is still in use today. It's a fascinating story and a great read.
The King Ranch corporation also has vast land holdings in Brazil and developed the Santa Gertrudis cattle which is excellent for warm subtropical climates.
Now I know why the western border of Texas is shaped as it is...its for a legend.

ReplyDeleteHa ha, the biggest cattle station in Australia is 5,800,000. Some of our back yards are bigger than Texas ranches.
