Incredible Indeed

In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice. Thus began the legendary ordeal of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men. When their ship was finally crushed between two ice floes, they attempted a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of the South Atlantic's heaviest seas to the closest outpost of civilization.

  1. Amazing book. I first read it as a kid 60 years ago.

“For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton.” -- Raymond Priestley, Antarctic explorer

  4. Fantastic book. The most amazing thing is there was a stowaway on Endurance too but Shackleton brought EVERYONE back, not just his picked men.

  6. I need a liberal professor to write a book telling the world how horrible Shackleton was, or how he was a bad leader and terrible to his men, or how his expedition made some horrible impact on the environment, or.....ya know, just do the usual progressive thing and turn the heroes of the past into the villains whom they tear down today cause the dead can't fight back.

    1. The act of "leading" men is not a popularity contest. And all participants are not "heroes."

      JEEZ!!!

  7. Other reading shows that Shackleton wasn't perfect but on the Endurance expedition he proved that he was a leader of men - and what men! The expedition's share of tragedy fell on the supply expedition, some of whom simply vanished.

  8. The best biographical novel I’ve ever read. Bought the book 30 years ago and still mesmerized. This story rocked. Can’t believe the HWood idiots haven’t made a movie. Just saying.
