And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

SF has always been its own special kind of mess, at least since the sixties. I’ve gone there many times from the 70s until 2010, not once since then. We lived in Fremont in the late 80s and used to go up on BART every couple of months or more often. I’ve also had business in the city and would travel there at least once a year.
In the 70s, there were dealers following me around in Chinatown and the Embarcadero offering their wares and a free taste. In the 80s it was just the usual crazies getting their freak on. In the 90s, running along Market being yelled at by the tweakers awake at 5 AM. In the Oughts, mostly just aggressive panhandlers at all hours at every corner. I have not experienced the degradation to open cesspit that is today’s SF. I guess now, the mess in SF is pretty much unavoidable everywhere, whereas before, there were spots that didn’t have the worst problems.
I worked as a sales manager for a South SF based company for ten years from 1980 to 1990. I flew from Philly to SFO about once a month for that entire time. The owner of the company was very big on entertainment and so we'd go downtown quite often and partake in fairly sumptuous meals at very nice restaurants. The city was not so horrible back then...not the total shithole it is today. I also have a good buddy who lives in "South City" and he claims that he never - ever goes downtown except to attend functions at the Marine Memorial Club. And then it's drive into the city, park in an indoor lot, attend the function, drive home. Far too many vagrants and druggies to deal with.
That photo with Coit Tower in the distance was taken from the north side of Lombard St. in the block just east of the bottom of the famous curvy drive section of Lombard. https://maps.app.goo.gl/trLwVH8s3a9af7KCA Been there many times. My only child lives a few miles to the west, just north of the panhandle.
Cool line up of cars.

Deletethat corvair might be a 64 nova (chevy II)
DeleteSplitting hairs, but the Fury was a Plymouth.
DeleteThe closest car is a 58-62 corvette (57 had single headlights). The nose is a custom unit.

Going by that 1964 Chevy, the first Democrat mayor was elected in 1964 and they're ruined the city since then exclusively.
ReplyDeleteNah.
ReplyDeleteThat looks to be late '60s, and Frisco was pretty much screwed by then.
Then the fungus spread, and doomed the entire misbegotten peninsula.
