In a boastful flex of military muscle at a time of increasing tensions, the Iranian army has provided a glimpse inside its new subterranean drone base.
The facility's specific location wasn't disclosed, but it's said to buried hundreds of meters underground somewhere in the Zagros Mountains, a nearly thousand-mile-long range spanning most of western Iran.
"Strategic UAV Base 313" was showcased in a Saturday report on Iran state television. The reporter was blindfolded during a 45-minute helicopter flight to the facility.
Ok, draw a circle at a 45 minute helicopter ride from the airport, and look for helicopter landing pads.
Of course, at some point the underground drones will have to go above ground to be useful. As what one imagines must be large, heavy blast doors creak open, squealing for better lubrication, and the drones emerge to fly about on evil missions, sent thence by men wearing bedsheets for clothing, this "secret" base will be revealed. One bunker buster to the opening, and all those pretty drones will be nicely buried.
Brilliant!
I'm curious; when did the United States Congress declare war on Iran? Don't the Iranians have a right to defend themselves by whatever means are necessary, up to and including nuclear and thermonuclear weapons? Iran does not pose a threat to the United States, except as an ally of the tail that wags America.
ReplyDeleteI've long been opposed to the use of targeted assassinations and drone strikes to kill "enemies" of the US and the tail that wags America. Somehow, I doubt bombing civilians is not going to make us friends around the world, or using bulldozers to run over protesters. (And it was wrong of Red China to kill their protesters at Tienanmen Square.)
Point out the sentence where CW said we should do anything, because I'm sure not seeing it.
DeleteDefend themselves by sponsoring terror all over the middle east? Beruit barracks, Khobar towers, etc, etc. Funding Hezbollah, Hamas and others. Seems to indicate they have declared war on many nations, only a few have struck back.
DeleteIran declared war against the USA in 1979, and has never rescinded it.
DeleteAre you implying the us gov't has even minimal competency?
ReplyDeleteI'm with PM above, WTF?
" I doubt bombing civilians is not going to make us friends around the world, or using bulldozers to run over protesters.:
ReplyDeleteMonk,
What makes you think we're looking for friends?
Bibi Netenyahu has been bleating " NUCLEAR IRAN" since 1994. Fact: in the 1950s the CIA paid street thugs to incite riots in Tehran. one of the thugs later became the Ayatollah Khomeini ( this is called Blowback)
ReplyDeleteI think you guys are missing the point. At what point does CW say that the US will or should do anything? I sure don't see it.
ReplyDeleteCW is pointing out a fundamental truth. It's not secret once they do something like this news story.
In the unlikely event other powers that would care about such a base didn't know it existed, not just Israel but the other Arab nations that don't like Iran, they were just gifted a bunch of intelligence.
A few bunker busters used right here in the US of A would be swell. Target for today is them who've had a hand in turning my country to shit.
ReplyDeleteyep
DeleteIn the past, the Israelis have found ways to bell the Iranian cat and wouldn't be surprised if they do it again here.
ReplyDeleteEven when I tussled with the Iranians we never attacked targets in Iran. I doubt we'd bother should we tussle again.
ReplyDeleteThere are probably many good people in Iran who think their country is nuts, kind of like here, but at the same time, I tend to not forget a people telling me they are my enemy. I am open to them recanting their declaration of war on The United States in the 1980's student uprising which gave rise to their present Islamic Republic, and the countless times they've chanted in the streets, "Death to America".
ReplyDeleteBut uhm nah gonna hold mah breath on dat.
I was in college when the Iranians flooded the U.S. after the Shah had been swept out. I met many of them. Sincerely nice, highly appreciative, loyal to a fault. Yes, there were some bitter malcontents among them, but they dealt with their own rather decisively.
ReplyDeleteIt looks suspiciously like a posed picture. No support equipment, lifts, or overhead cranes visible. Just a line of shiny airplanes and little drones sitting on display stands. My guess is the planes were parked in a facility built for something else. Maybe a yet to be commissioned underground factory or more likely simply a road tunnel. Hence the painted center line and sweeping turns. Also, the little target sized drones have limited range. They wouldn't launch them from a central location far from potential targets.
ReplyDeleteAgree, looks fake. If you've seen the inside of a military hangar, you'd notice the lack of hoses, wires, signs and other stuff on the walls. Wonder if they have a version of OSHA? Probably not.
DeleteExists in CGI world only is my guess. Why would anybody go to the trouble of those huge vaulted ceilings? They don't have that kind of money for wasted space and it is the opposite of hardened.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see all these neutral, ambivalent sentiments towards supporting a country led by Islamic religious fanatics that start their prayer services chanting "Death to America, the Great Satan". Yes I'm sure they're harmless, and secretly mean us well.....smdh.
CGI. It's too clean.
