And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

From the Family Albums: Pacific Northwest Ferry - they reached the pinnacle of modern design with this one - only downhill from here.
The MV Kalakala, Puget Sound ferry from '35 to '67. Was a fish processing platform in Alaska for years, was junked, then brought back to Seattle about a decade ago. All rusted out and falling apart there were some efforts to repair and resurrect it, but it was too far gone. I think it went south to Cali. I did step onto it when it was docked near my home a few years back. Only a few steps, though. Too shaky on the car deck. Would have been nice. Look it up. Had some great amenities and the old cars it ferried over the decades are a great sight.
Had to take a landing craft style ferry 12 minute ride from the Isle of Skye to the island of Eilean Bàn back in 1976. Returned a some years later and a bridge had gown.
My new wife and I took the ferry- really, a floating dump truck- from Fajardo to Culebra back in 1994. It was carrying construction vehicles and supply for the little island's first hotel. This was the first day it was running after a massive storm- the seas were huge. I was up front having a blast in the spray which was heaving way over the deck and up onto the bridge near where we were sitting. It was all fun and games until I listened to the construction workers near us, who were passing around a pint of rum. "Madre di Dios!", after the really good ones. My wife was very pale. Fairly short ride but interesting. Most beautiful beaches we've ever seen in the Caribbean.
Few things more exciting for a tyke than having Dad drive the car onto the boat for a voyage. We did it from Maine to Nova Scotia in the 60's.
