Cypress tree frieze motifs along the remains of the staircase at Apadana Palace (Persepolis, modern-day Iran); constructed approximately 515 B.C.

  1. Shown are elongated, tapered cones like a pine tree. Cypress cones are round and much smaller.
    The branches of cypress do not grown in the manner shown. Even if the motif is styleized, is more resembles a pine than a cypress.
    Species of pine did then and does now grow in the region.
