  1. Avro Lancaster tail gunner. At some point they decided to take the center perspex window out to increase visibility. Too many bombers lost to tiny specks and scratches that suddenly spat 20mm mine shells…But this measure certainly increased losses of body parts to the grim cold!

    1. German night fighter crews generally appeared to be able to sneak up on a bomber without being seen. Expert German crews achieved very high scores and, inevitably, RAF bombers were lost in large numbers - a very dangerous occupation.

  2. I've read that the gunner's breath would freeze on the perspex. Starting in 1941 bomber crews were given electrically heated boots and gloves. It looks like the secret Monica tail warning radar antenna has been blurred out by the censor.
