  2. I think it is a sled with netting attached that the retriever ship would tow/snag in order to pick up the Kingfisher. Then the hoist would come into play. The ship is underway.

  3. Looks like the plane is still under power in the 1st part of this GIF, stopped prop is only visible in the 2nd half.

  4. The engine would have to be running for the plane to keep up with the ship and maintain airflow over the rudder to control direction. Once it is attached you can shut it down.

  5. I wonder how many of those backseaters/observers(?) went into the drink during that process. Hopefully the buoyancy of their Mae West would overcome the weight of their balls.
