And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
If I remember correctly, he was supposed to be a US Marine Vietnam veteran. One of the first for TV back in the days when the general public blamed the warrior for the war.
Selleck Upon receiving a draft notice during the Vietnam War, Selleck enlisted in the California Army National Guard.[16] He served in Company C, 1st Battalion, 160th Infantry from 1967 to 1973, attaining the rank of sergeant.[17] WIKI
Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV (Tom Selleck) is an ex-Navy "NIA" (ONI) Lieutenant, and Vietnam Special Ops veteran who resigned his commission at age thirty-three because he never got to be twenty-three. On the beautiful Hawaiian islands, Magnum is a P.I. who enjoys life, his buddies, and who works just hard enough to keep it real.
You should see his portrayal of Jesse Stone. I think there were 6 movies made (for Hallmark), and he did a really good job. Robert B Parker, who wrote the novels (also wrote 'Spenser for Hire'), said that Selleck absolutely nailed the character. He has a great rep as a hard worker, and I always thought he was a bit under-rated as an actor.
Nine movies. He was contracted to do at least one more. Not sure if it will ever happen. After Parker passed away I think Tom was doing some of the writing for the last movies.
Best Magnum episode "DID YOU SEE THE SUNRISE", Magnum did not like killing however the evil of Ivan had to be dealt with so Thomas asked, Did you see the sunrise Ivan asked while yes Thomas I did, all you hear is the gun shot...point understood.
Tom always packs a 1911.
ReplyDeleteLoved that show, so 2nd firearm purchase had to be a 1911

ReplyDeleteNope. SEAL.
DeleteThanks for making the record correct. I knew that it was an "elite" branch.
DeleteSupposedly, the fictional Magnum PI was the Seal.

Anyone notice how crammed into that Ferrari he is? Tom Selleck is a tall, wide-framed man jammed into that 308.
ReplyDeleteI am 5'10" and I am cramped in a 308. I have to fall out of the car to get out of it.

ReplyDeleteAnybody remember the episodes of 'The Rockford Files' featuring Tom Selleck as Lance White? Classic.
ReplyDeleteYes! Those were so funny. Really good episodes. I think he dressed in white and drove a white corvette.
DeleteI seem to remember a white Caddy. And doesn't he marry a wealthy girl and get all the credit for the solving the case... to the exasperation of Jim.
DeleteYES! Lance was a total screwup. Jim had to save his a** all the time.

There was a movie some years ago, and Tom played a gay man.
ReplyDeleteIt was quite unexpected to see Selleck in that role, but his portrayal was excellent.
"in & Out", 1997
DeleteBusy watching Magnum again, currently on season 4, not bad.
ReplyDeleteQuigley was his best.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I watch that again from time to time.
DeleteHalf the credit has to go to Alan Rickman, a great movie needs a great villain.

ReplyDeleteSummer of '64 I was robbed at work. First time I had a close up view of a similar 1911. Other guy had a .25 Brownie.
