And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

It wouldn't matter, the standard military arm was a smoothbore musket. The accuracy was so poor that a Prussian army test revealed that at 100 yards 54% of shots missed a 30ft by 30ft target. Al_in_Ottawa
Uniforms of the day were bright as so the commanders and troops could ID them in the fog of massive back powder smoke. Also, why the used Large Bright Flags and Drums for morale and command and control.
Also, a unit with a reputation for being bad asses the appearance of tall guys wearing tall bearskin hats often shook up the lesser units.

Given the pre-industrial times back then, I've wondered how on earth governments could afford to dress their soldiers up like that.
