Can't go wrong with a Leatherman

  1. 2 handed operation. Expect to only have one hand usable, and probably not your dominant one, when things go awry. A quick way to see if your multi tool is up to the task: tape your dominant thumb down and the fingers together then try to open it. Do the same with your fire starter & ammo reloads. It’s an eye opener.

  3. I prefer Gerbers. I have 4 Leatherman, 1 Sharade, and 2 Gerbers. All of them military issue. Every time I got sent to the sandbox I was issued a multi-tool, knife, and new pair of boots. My daily carry is a Gerber needle nose multi-tool and a Benchmade auto knife. Both were mil issue.

  4. A couple of added components would increase it's usefulness. A sewing bobbin of thin gauge wire. A strong sewing needle with a plastic card w/sewing thread wrapping for clothing repairs.

  7. The Leatherman fabric sheaths could also stand some improvements. The corners of the tools will wear holes in the sheaths when carried daily, unfortunately. A sturdier leather or other fabric sheath would be a wise investment. Nice thing about the Signal and much smaller Leatherman Skeletool is that the biner makes for a convenient anchor too.
