And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

A Lancaster GR. Mk. III from No.279 Squadron releases a Mk. IIA Airborne Lifeboat in 1945. These lifeboats were designed for air-sea rescue, dropped from modified aircraft to assist survivors of ocean emergencies.
Yes they were successful. The Vickers Warwick was used to drop lifeboats successfully from 1943 onwards but they were prone to crashing if an engine failed. The Lancaster offered a longer range and could be flown safely with one or two engines shut down. The RAF used both types in the North Sea to rescue downed bomber crews. Al_in_Ottawa
They were "designed for..." But did they really serve that purpose successfully?
ReplyDeleteApparently they were a success.

Do I see legs dangling from the airplane?
