    1. I am afraid that the decades of hard drinking "cooked" his brain.

    2. Family history of personality disorders. Periodic bouts of depression.
      Multiple injuries including broken bones, burns and severe concussions. Also tropical diseases and infections resulting from a lifetime of trying to live up to his reputation.
      Diabetes and heart disease in later life, exacerbated by alcohol intake.

      Death by suicide was foreshadowed by that of his father and provides insight to the quote above.

  4. He had demons with which to deal. Who does not? Many brilliant people have demons. Ignorance is bliss. He is well-known and produced some "pretty good" work. At best we may have a favorable response for a 2 or 3 sentence post.

  5. I did a short essay in English Class about H. blowing his head off. The teach was horrified. I am normal and not a danger to anyone, honest.....
