  1. I've owned a couple of Derringers in the past, but I don't have much use for them now. Small 9mm's have almost made those obsolete... but it's a pretty picture.

    1. Hi Standard o/u .22 mag, here.

  2. Is that considered a blackjack or a sap?

    1. Sap. Saps are flat, and blackjacks are a round shaft (coiled spring inside), but the terms have been bastardized and interchanged enough that someone will argue.

    2. IMHO the only "bastards" are the snowflakes who got local governments to refuse cops to carry and use them.

  3. Those derringers only carry 2 rounds, they are very hard to reload quickly, most calibers lose velocity in a barrel that short, and you can get a compact automatic in the same size envelope with a lot more firepower. But I still kind of want one.

    1. Name one fully automatic in compact size available to the civilian market.

    2. Perhaps someone meant "semi-automatic"?

    3. Those tiny two shot pistols are not meant to reload (quickly) but to get up very close and personal and blow the perp's brains through the wall behind them.

    4. Looks to be a similar barrel length to the ubiquitous snubbie revolver. So, velocity should be comparable. I don't think I would bother with +P ammo in the short barrel pistols. More recoil and muzzle flash than useful performance, IIRC.

  5. Any gun is better than no gun any day. Yet, it may be last resorts are just that. Unless one is good at up close and personal and it does not get more personal up close than a knife and a sap. .Out of all loads the .38 wad cutter in a derringer is pretty effective man stopper because they have that sharp corner which cuts thru instead of sliding thru tissue and bone. They seem to be the load of choice for cops who carry snubby 38 revolvers, with a lot of emperical evidence attesting to their effectiveness.
My wife carries one of those sweet light weight aluminum and titanium Charter Arms revolvers. My buddy made up a box of plus P wadcutter loads using hard alloy lead slugs. She preferred a 5 shot over a automatic, exactly because it was so simple a point and shoot pistol. That was after trying out a few autos, smart girl i say. You got to carry what you find most comforting to you.

    1. My stepfather was a Marine who saw action in the Pacific during WWII. There was a loaded handgun in every nightstand and drawer in the house. After he passed, mom kept one - a small 32 five shot revolver. Mom was 5 ft tall and maybe 100 lbs soaking wet, but don't mess with her.

  6. I've got an American Derringer in .45LC/.410. It is just the thing for snakes. That's a Bond Arms in the picture. Greg Bond used to work at American Derringer. That's where he got the design, which is originally based on the old Remington Model 95.
