And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
heat ?, what fucking heat ! owned one back in the 1980's, the wife loved the damn thing. in Kansas of all places. what you end up with is two small circles that you try to see out of. one time in the freezing rain, the doors froze shut. had to get out thru the back hatch ! good traction though.
No VW Ever had adequate wipers! In falling snow, with no traffic or just snow covered pavement, you are better off to keep the windshield cold. The snow just blows off. Back when I was on the road a lot, and drove in fresh snow fairly often, I used to carry a towel that I could roll up and use to cover the defroster vents to keep it cold. Much better results.
I don't know about the vans, but I don't think the Bugs had windshield heater vents. My ex-wife said that when she was growing up, she and her sisters had to reach out the window to scrape their mom's bug's windshield, because there was no defroster.
I too had one and I mounted a kerosene auxiliary heater with a tube forcing the hot air to the windshield and surprisingly it worked except for keeping a window open for fresh air...
I had one with vacuum wipers i think it was a 61.Hell my 67 Bronco had vacuum wipers. When stepped on the gas the wipers stopped. Good times gone for good im afraid. Klaus
Gee, I loved my bus. Bought it in Berkeley and used to commute back and forth in it to San Diego. It loved going up the grapevine even fully loaded. Never really needed wipers or heat though.
I had a girlfriend in the 70's with a Karman Gia. It had a lever that moved to operate a gas valve for a gas heater....Anyone remember those? Corvairs and Porches had the same issues. Just put your winter sox and coat on and ride on!
Not so much the wipers as it is the heat. It has to come from the back of the bus from an air cooled engine.
ReplyDeleteVolkswagens... too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.
ReplyDeleteSo does the acid, but I digress.

ReplyDeleteOnly the real pro drivers seem to know about the magic of a cold windshield. I've failed in every attempt to get others to try it.
Deleteand on some of the oldest ones they had vacuum operated wipers.

ReplyDeleteSo does that whole useless VW bus for that weather

ReplyDeleteHad to have an ice scraper for the inside of the window.
ReplyDeleteEverything is inadequate, it's a VW microbus.

Drove a Bug during three Berlin winters, your breath would crystallize into ice fog which would stick to the inside of the windshield and windows.

ReplyDeleteYea, and the people behind you going 40 mph loved you and it about as much as the students there loved working.
