Yup, you can buy coils and platinum plugs for your car's V8 for less than one igniter plug for your jet aircraft. The good news is usually there are only 2 igniters per engine. A-10’s have GE TF-34-100 series engines with only 2 igniters each. They fire during the start cycle and when the gun trigger is pulled. Trust me here, I changed more than my share of them.
My mistake then, on the Canadair Challenger maintenance course we were told that the CF34 engines have two igniters whereas the TF34s have four. Would the engines flame-out on the A10 when the gun is fired? Al_in_Ottawa
That was Spirit of America. I remember seeing it at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Those were the days America could still build innovative stuff.
Old British bikes had really marginal ignition systems. Good plugs were critical for starting them. The shop had a sparkplug cleaner/tester. The performance difference, in the tester, and kickstarting, between Champions and all the other brands was quite wide. We stopped using them for anything, even lawnmowers, if there was an alternative available.
What was available to sponsored racers was not available on the shelf. No idea what was different in construction.
I remember seeing this magazine ad, in situ, back in the day. Can't remember which mag it was, Time, Newsweek, Playboy or probably the now defunct SI. Yah, I'm THAT old.
Betting the plugs in that are not the same you buy for your old Buick...
