  3. Did a little bit of sleuthing. Apparently what you are seeing there is only a portion of the support wall that originally existed, long ago. The support wall that you see in this picture had originally extended in both directions from the building and the top of it acted like a sidewalk.   5. As a 'Security' structure, it would make sense that a ladder would be lowered from a trapdoor for entry and then pulled back up after use.
