And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Sheffield, UK, Forgemasters turned this to a tolerance of 5/1000 of an inch. 282 tonnes down to 160 tonnes. They also made it nice and shiny, which is important for the sales department.
If memory serves, the spec was +/- 005 Diameter, but +/- 0005 over the entire length, Essentially: no taper / ripples. I don't know how they did it, but they earned the bonus for doing it.
Somebody is getting the shaft. I remember that the mill rolls were ground with a larger OD in the center so that they would roll the steel flat when they were pressed down. The details escape me.

ReplyDeleteHard to machine to those tolerances, need a climate controlled environment. 40 yrs as a machinist.
ReplyDeleteIf it's just a roll in a steel mill that .005 is just a number.....sure there is adjustments that can be made while in use!
