And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

United States Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. St.Louis, Missouri Construction, Architect : Eero Saarinen. Photo by Bob Arteaga, 1965
Went to the peak of the arch in 1991. It was exhilarating, but I had this constant feeling when I looked through the tiny windows that the entire arch was falling over.
The first time I saw the arch was from across the river, prit near the same vantage as this photo. And it was a time prior to this photo; the cranes were there but the gap at the top was a panel or two wider. The structure gleamed shiny and bright in the sun.

ReplyDeleteThe arch is as tall as it is wide.
ReplyDeleteIt looks taller in the picture but they are both 630 ft!
Deleteone question: is that a safe neighborhood at night?
ReplyDeleteNO!
DeleteThe neighborhood is pretty dodgy at any time of day, 24/7/365 to be honest.
DeleteI liked his original design(cost is no consideration) of a span across the river. this is great but that would have been magnificent.
